The Risk Is Real

Why Excavator Training Matters

Excavators are among the most powerful machines on a jobsite — and among the least forgiving. NIOSH investigations show most excavator-related deaths are struck-by incidents: workers caught by a swinging boom, run over by a moving machine, or hit by a bucket that detached from a quick coupler. Operators themselves are at risk from tip-overs on slopes, soft soil, and trench edges.

OSHA does not publish a standalone excavator certification standard, but it does require employers to instruct every employee in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions under 29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2), and it enforces excavator-related hazards through the excavation standard (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P), the material-handling equipment rules (29 CFR 1926.602), and the General Duty Clause. An untrained operator is an open citation — and an open risk to every worker on the ground.

Our excavator training gives operators the engineering understanding behind the rules: how the center of gravity moves with every boom swing, why tracks must never be set parallel to a trench wall, and what a travel-path inspection must cover before the machine ever moves.

Common excavator hazards OSHA cites
  • Operating near trenches with tracks parallel to the trench wall
  • Swinging the bucket over workers on the ground
  • No pre-use inspection of fluids, controls, horns, and backup alarms
  • Digging without utility clearance (underground line strikes)
  • Traveling on slopes sideways instead of straight up and down
  • No seat belt use — fatal in roll-over events
Regulatory note: OSHA penalties effective in 2026 run up to $16,550 per serious violation and $165,514 per willful or repeat violation. Training documentation is the first thing a compliance officer asks for after an equipment incident.
Technical Deep Dive

The Numbers Behind Safe Excavator Operation

These are the working rules taught in the course — the specifics operators are tested on.

Rule Requirement Taught in the Course
Trench shoring trigger Trenches deeper than 5 ft must be shored before entry
Spoil placement Drop spoil far enough back — minimum 2 ft from the trench edge
Track positioning Tracks never parallel to a trench wall; stay on the same side while digging
Slope travel Straight up and down only, bucket low, loads on the high side
Mount/dismount 3-point contact always; never jump off — even after electrical contact, stay on the machine
Utilities Clear with the utility company before digging; inspect the travel path for soft earth
Parking Bucket and blade lowered, controls neutral, engine cooled, key removed

The stability principle behind all of it: the machine's center of gravity must stay inside the stability box. Every boom swing, bucket load, sudden stop, and slope shifts the CG — narrow machines like mini excavators tip when it leaves the box.

What You’ll Learn in This Training

This comprehensive online excavator training covers the theory OSHA requires for safe operation, drawn directly from our field training program:

✔ The differences between a mini excavator and a full-sized excavator
✔ Stability engineering principles: center of gravity and the stability box
✔ How to conduct a pre-use inspection of each machine
✔ Travel path inspections for underground utilities and soft earth
✔ Utility clearance before digging (call-before-you-dig)
✔ Safety rules when operating an excavator or working near one
✔ Safe operation near excavations — spoil placement, shoring triggers, positioning
✔ Slope operation: loads on the high side, straight up and down travel
✔ Electrical hazards — power line contact procedures
✔ Weather hazards and changing soil conditions
✔ Parking, shutdown, maintenance, and repair safety
✔ Loading, tie-down, and road transport of the machine
✔ ONLINE WRITTEN TEST + operator skill competency test for your employer

Your Credential

Why Employers Trust This Excavator Training

Our program is built on decades of hands-on equipment training experience. The online course delivers the classroom instruction and written test; your employer or a qualified trainer then verifies hands-on skills using the included Operator Skill Competency Test — the same two-part structure OSHA uses for powered industrial equipment.

You'll be trained on the engineering behind excavator stability — not just a list of rules — so you can adapt safely to new machines, new sites, and new soil conditions.

  • Certificate of Completion — downloadable and printable immediately
  • Operator Skill Competency Test for your employer's hands-on evaluation
  • Documentation your employer can keep on file for OSHA
  • Free test retakes until you pass

Frequently Asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about OSHA compliance, safety training, and working with Aggie Safety.
Does OSHA require excavator certification?
OSHA does not have a standalone excavator certification standard, but it requires employers to train every operator to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions under 29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2), and it cites untrained excavator operation under 29 CFR 1926.602 and the General Duty Clause. This course provides the documented formal instruction and written test employers need, plus a skill competency test for the hands-on portion.
Does this course cover mini excavators?
Yes. The course covers both mini excavators and full-sized excavators, including the differences in stability, transport, and safe operation between the two machine classes.
Do I need experience before taking this course?
No experience is needed. The online course covers the theory and safety knowledge required; hands-on operating skills are developed and verified with your employer or trainer using the included competency test.
Will this course teach me to physically operate an excavator?
Hands-on operation is not part of the online portion — OSHA expects practical skills to be verified on the actual machine you will use, at your worksite. The course prepares you for that evaluation and includes the Operator Skill Competency Test your employer or trainer completes with you.
How long is the course?
Most students complete the course in the typical duration listed above. You can start and stop whenever it is convenient — your progress is saved, and there is no time limit to finish.
If I fail the test, do I have to pay to take it again?
No. You may retake the test as many times as you need to pass at no additional charge.
Is your course approved by OSHA?
OSHA does not formally approve any training company or material — it publishes the requirements training must cover. Our excavator training course is built to meet and exceed those OSHA training requirements.
How quickly do I get proof of completion?
Immediately. As soon as you pass the online test, you can download and print your personalized Certificate of Completion to show your employer.
Do you offer refunds?
Yes. If you purchased within the last 5 days, have not completed the course, and have not generated your certificate, you are eligible for a full refund — no questions asked. Contact our support team at info@lonestar-losscontrol.com with your order details.
Where is the certificate accepted?
The certificate is accepted in all U.S. states, and in any country that follows OSHA-based requirements, including Canada and Mexico.
